Did you know that not everyone can enjoy virtual reality?
When surrounded by a virtual environment, some users experience what is known as virtual reality sickness. Symptoms can go from slight headaches and discomfort to vomiting and lack of balance. In short, it tends to leave the user disoriented and somewhat confused. It is closely related to motion sickness, except it is not motion that affects the user, but the perception of motion their minds create when immersed in the virtual environment. There are a few theories as to why VR sickness occurs, but the one that is commonly accepted is that the user’s brain experiences an incongruence between sight stimulus and their sense of motion. In other ways, a part of the brain is saying that the body is moving, but another part of the brain refutes this input. Developers have yet to find a way to eliminate this confusion, but there are techniques being developed to fix it. For instance, Nasum Virtualis places a static virtual nose (meaning that the nose never moves) so that the user has a constant fixed reference when they are within the virtual environment.
